Item 52 – Solvang sausagefest

    I went to Solvang with my parents WAY back in the day. We might have to make another trip out there sometime. Right now we’re planning on heading down to Cambria pretty soon. Never been there, but Travelzoo had a really good deal, so that made it a pretty attractive place to head down and check out. Less than half the original price helps to keep it in budget.

    Shawn, sorry I didn’t check the blog until we got back, but I think the kids would have made the meet up difficult. Or maybe it would have been dealing with the kids after the free wine tastings…

    Well, maybe next time. It would be cool to meet up with you both sometime. Especially if it was while the kids were off with their grandparents.

    Pasties (Pronounced p-ASS-teas) are a staple of British food. They were invented by Cornish Tin miners and originally had meat and potatoes at one end and jam at the other. Kind of a two course meal in one hand held item. That’s the reason a traditional pastie has a large crimped edge of pastry, so the miners could use it as a handle with their dirty hands and then discard it. Interestingly, since there are so many Cornish immigrants into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to work on the Tin mines there, the pastie has become the local dish of the UP. In the modern era we’ve dispensed with the jam and a ‘cornish pastie’ has meat and potatoes in it although there are hundreds of different varieties of pastie around. I can think of 5 pastie shops on the streets of Bath off the top of my head. Pasties are so loved by the British public that when the government tried to add extra VAT onto warmed pasties there was uproar with one of the bigger tabloids organising a protest against the ‘pastie tax’. I don’t feel that strongly about them, but they are good street food.
